Meteora
Meteora is a unique geological formation located in central Greece, near the town of Kalambaka. The word 'Meteora' means 'suspended in the air' in Greek, and it aptly describes the breathtaking sight of massive rock pillars rising abruptly from the ground with ancient monasteries perched on top.
The monasteries of Meteora were built by monks starting in the 14th century and served as places of refuge and religious contemplation. Access to the monasteries was originally only possible through rock-climbing or by using baskets and pulleys, but nowadays there are staircases and bridges connecting them to the ground.
